I’m amazed and delighted when I picture these books in the hands of kids in Iceland or Indonesia or Brazil. How did this happen, and how did these stories escape from my laundry room, anyway? What do kids in Japan or Germany think about my neighborhood in Chicago or a small town buried in the cornfields of Michigan? It’s all pretty hard to grasp and intriguing to imagine.
Here are a few of the translation covers, and some pictures taken on book tour in the U. K., the Netherlands and Italy. At one mind-bender dinner put on by Scholastic during the Bologna Children's Book Fair, in Italy, I was lucky enough to speak with many of the publishers of Chasing Vermeer and listen to their discussions about title and translation challenges, pentominoes and blue candy. |
